Important Message

What is a specialized mental health nurse practitioner?

This is a new profession (as of 2019). The specialized mental health nurse practitioner is a nurse who has completed a master's degree and another specialized post-graduate diploma, enabling her to perform medical acts that were previously reserved for doctors: diagnosing mental disorders, prescribing tests such as blood tests, as well as prescribing medication.

See the Offered Services section below for accepted referral reasons.

Exclusions

- Patients under 6 or over 65 years of age
- Evaluation of autism spectrum disorders: refer to CEVAM
- Specific learning disorders: refer to neuropsychology, orthopedagogy or speech therapy (if written language is concerned).
- Language disorders: refer to speech therapy
- Intellectual disability and giftedness: referral to neuropsychology or psychology

Why is it so expensive?

The price of the evaluation is comparable to or lower than similar services, and includes everything from report writing and discussions with the physician and other professionals involved, to the completion of forms if necessary.
